Lakeside Middle School is making a special effort to ensure that all students fully benefit from their education by attending school regularly. Student attendance is essential first step for students to learn. The pandemic created many barriers for students, and we want you to know that our school is committed to supporting your student to attend and access their education. Your students' future is out first priority, and we want to partner with you to ensure their success.

The 2023-24 Student Handbook outlines the Lakeside Middle School attendance policy. A brief overview of our policy is listed below.

Excused Absences

Illness, family emergencies (ex. funeral or serious illness), and appointments of a medical, denal or legal nature represent excused absences. Refer to RCW 392-401-020 for a comprehensive list of excused absences.

Prior Arrangements

Lakeside Middle School strongly discourages students taking vacations during the semester or leaving school prior to the normal closing date. We request that all requests for absences be made in advance, unless in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. All prearranged absences occurring the final week of the semester must have administration approval.

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in adhering to the following guidelines:

  • The attached form must be completed and returned to the school office THREE DAYS PRIOR to departure date.
  • A prearranged absence form will be issued by the office to be presented by the student to his/her teachers.
  • Make-up assignments are due upon return to class.

Please send all requests to [email protected].

Unexcused Absences

Absences for personal reasons with parent permission that do not meet criteria of excused absences will be marked for the following reasons (RCW 28A.225.020):

  • Has failed to attend the majority of hours or periods in an average school day or has failed to comply with the school district policy; and
  • Has failed to meet the school district's policy for excused absences; or
  • Has failed to comply with alternative learning experience program attendance requirements.
  • The school will notify a student's parent/guardian in writing or by telephone whenever the student has failed to attend school after one unexcused absence within any month.
  • The school will hold a conference with the parent or guardian after three unexcused absences within any month during the current school year.
  • Between the student's second and seventh unexcused absence, the school must begin the BECCA Bill process (RCW 28A.225.010).

A student under the age of 18 who is absent without the knowledge and consent of a parent or absent from school after once arriving on campus without the knowledge and consent of the school is truant. Arriving to class after 10 minutes without the parent or school knowledge. Repeated truancy may be cause for disciplinary action, suspension, or court referral.
